4 Tech Gadgets You No Longer Need
Technology devices accumulate quickly as the next “big thing” surfaces. A New York Times article by writer Sam Grobart argues you no longer need to accumulate every tech toy imaginable, and adds that you can probably shed some of the tools you already have.
Here are some tech gadgets you can pitch, according to the article:
1. Desktop computer: When the one you have now goes bad, should you really replace it? Laptops meet most people’s computing power needs and you won’t be tied down to one spot.
2. Camcorder: Smartphones can capture video and new digital S.L.R. cameras (such as the Canon EOS Rebel T1i) can shoot in full high-definition video and you’ll even be able to use the interchangeable lenses for still images and use it for video to capture close ups.
3. USB Thumb Drive: You don’t need to carry hardware that could be lost or broken to share files any longer. Instead save and exchange your files by using the cloud, such as with services like Dropbox, or e-mail yourself attachments and store drafts in folders on your Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or other e-mail accounts.
4. GPS Unit: Your smartphone can do the same thing and it’s cheaper. For example, Android smartphones already come built-in with Google’s turn-by-turn navigation app. The iPhone offers plenty of GPS apps too, such as the Navigon’s MobileNavigator (which starts at $30) or ALK’s CoPilot Live ($20).

30-Year Mortgage Rates Hold Steady This Week
Mortgage rates continued to hold steady below 5 percent this week, according to Freddie Mac’s weekly mortgage market survey.
"Interest rates for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages have averaged at or below 5 percent in every week but one this year, contributing to record home affordability,” says Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac’s chief economist.
Here are how rates fared for the week:
- 30-year fixed-rate mortgages: averaged 4.88 percent, up just slightly from last week’s 4.87 percent. Last year at this time, the 30-year mortgage rate averaged 4.95 percent.
- 15-year fixed-rate mortgages: averaged 4.15 percent, holding at the same as last week’s average. Last year at this time, the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage stood at 4.32 percent.
- 5-year adjustable-rate mortgages: averaged 3.73 percent this week, up slightly from last week’s 3.72 percent. A year ago at this time, the 5-year adjustable-rate mortgage averaged 4.05 percent.
"Mortgage rates held steady amid a strong employment report,” Nothaft says. The private sector added 222,000 jobs in February--the most since March 2006. The unemployment rate also fell to its lowest share since April 2009 at 8.9 percent.

Dallas Theater Center kicks off $12 million advancement campaign
A steady stream of good news has been flowing from the Dallas Theater Center in recent weeks – popular artistic director Kevin Moriarty’s contract was renewed through 2014; the company ended 2010, a particularly difficult year for most arts organizations, in the black; and fundraising powerhouse Heather Kitchen was hired as its new managing director. Now, Dallas Theater Center has launched a $12 million advancement campaign, with $8 million already committed.
The “Bringing the Wyly Theatre to Life” campaign aims to advance and elevate Dallas Theater Center’s artistic and educational initiatives, as well as ensure long-term financial stability for the company.
“Live theater has the power to spark imaginations, encourage dialogue and transform lives,” said Rebecca Fletcher, campaign chair. “Our new home in the architecturally and technologically amazing Wyly Theatre has allowed us to dramatically raise the quality of our productions and make what happens inside this state-of-the-art facility as outstanding as the building itself.”
The campaign will fund new plays and musicals, as well as a variety of artistic and community initiatives, including the establishment of a resident acting company, subsidizing the popular “Pay What You Can” program and forging partnerships with local arts programs at Southern Methodist University and Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. During the life of the campaign, as programming and staff grows to achieve the plan’s objectives, Dallas Theater Center will build earned and contributed revenues to replace campaign funds and establish an $800,000 cash reserve.
Major donations so far include a $1 million gift from Diane and Hal Brierley to establish the Brierley Resident Acting Company; a $1 million gift from Deedie and Rusty Rose to name the Potter Production Studio; three $500,000 gifts from Helen and Frank Risch, Donna Wilhelm and Dee and Charles Wyly; a $250,000 gift from Shannon and Ted Skokos to fund the DTC/Booker T. Washington High School Learning Lab; and a $250,000 gift from Kimberly and Scott Sheffield to establish a musical theater series.
Additionally, the campaign has achieved 100-percent participation from Dallas Theater Center’s board of trustees.
“The fact that we’ve already raised two-thirds of our fundraising goal during our quiet phase shows the enthusiasm and confidence that Dallas’ arts patrons have, as well as the potential that they see, in our Dallas Theater Center,” said Frank Risch, Dallas Theater Center board chairman. “We hope that our bold vision will command the attention of patrons throughout North Texas and inspire others to follow and give in lasting ways.”

Three New Tenants Set to Open at The Shops at Park Lane
Dallas, TX (Vocus/PRWEB) March 09, 2011
The Shops at Park Lane, Dallas’ premier mixed-use retail development, announced today that RARE, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria and L’Acqua Nail Salon plan to open stores by the end of the year.
RARE is an upscale modern sushi restaurant and lounge with a unique interior design. The two- level restaurant will have clean architecture, minimalist design and outdoor seating on both levels. RARE will include a full-service bar in a high energy social gathering venue centered on incredible food, a wide selection of alcoholic beverages and great music.
With over 100 years of pizza-making traditions, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria offers delicious coal-fired brick oven, New York-style thin crust pizza. Designed and built by hand, the coal-fired oven at Grimaldi’s delivers a unique flavor and consistency that is just not possible from wood or gas ovens. Weighing in at 25 tons and heated by 100 pounds of coal per day, the oven heats up to 1,200 degrees. The intense heat of the oven evenly bakes the pies to create Grimaldi’s famous crispy and smoky thin crust that Zagat has voted best pizza year after year.
L’Acqua Nail Salon is an upscale nail salon and spa, which will be located in the retail space below The Heights building. L’Acqua has an additional location at Firewheel Town Center in Garland and is expected to open at The Shops at Park Lane this spring.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome these three new wonderful tenants to The Shops at Park Lane,” said Greg Karlan, President of Northwood Retail. “Our ultimate goal for the development is for it to grow into a welcoming and pedestrian-friendly community and a one-stop shop for all Dallas shoppers.”
In 2009, The Shops at Park Lane opened its first stores with Nordstrom Rack, Dick’s Sporting Goods, The Children’s Place and Lane Bryant/Cacique. More stores have continued to open since then including Dallas’ flagship Whole Foods Market, Gordon Biersch, Dallas’ flagship Old Navy and Saks OFF 5TH and Ulta Cosmetics. Additional stores, boutiques and restaurants will continue to open over the next year, including HomeGoods opening April 10th.
